Optimizing Network Performance with Wireshark (ONPW)
Who should attend
- Everybody who is asked "Why is the application slow?"
- Every network engineer who is challenged with "Why does your network makes my users wait?"
- Network administrators, engineers and consultants who are responsible for troubleshooting and performance analysis of networks.
Prerequisites
- Contents of the classes Packet Analysis with Wireshark Analyzer (PAW) and Advanced Packet Analysis with Wireshark Analyzer (APAW) (or Packet Analysis Power Workshop (PAPW) respectively)
- Knowledge of Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices Part 2 (ICND2) or similar Know-How is recommended
Course Objectives
This class teaches seasoned Wireshark users how to identify performance problems. While analyzing a complex, mashed network and multi-tier Client-Server architectures the class introduces techniques to identify performance problems. With a lot of practical exercises students identify latencies of network links and active components. The class demonstrates the effect of typical misconfigurations and misconceptions in applications, servers, workstations and networks. Students learn to combine Wireshark with a spreadsheet application to calculate precise response times and present them as meaningful charts.
Course Content
- Calculate response times from the users point of view from a network trace
- Calculate network latency
- Follow TCP sessions through NAT-/PAT-Gateways
- Influence of proxy servers and load balancers
- Reasons for excessive retransmissions and their impact on performance
- Analysis of multi-tier Client-Server applications
- Follow client requests in HTTP connections to backend database servers
- Recognise network bottlenecks from trace files
- Analysis of standard protocols like SMB or database protocols to identify application problems from a trace file
- Optimization of routing protocols for redundant networks
